The only people who seem to be off-grid are those who never had access to the grid in the first place (remote cabins). As for batteries, there is a good forum on which to ask that question: http://www.wind-sun.com/ForumVB/index.php . Lead-acid AGM batteries are common. Our system is grid-tied, and frankly, I don’t know of anyone who had grid power who decided to disconnect after getting solar.
