Off The Grid 002
January 24th, 2010
002 Electricity This show is about one groups experience with living off the grid. Some people say “Youre not off the grid. You’re on Youtube”. This show wont be about defining the term. The term ‘off the grid’ is defined by people differently but I can say from my year experience, it’s always a work in progress.

I am going to Alaska soon,, will be off grid,, choose to be near a good lake with lots of fish. Ill also be using a rain catchment system and gravity for watering my garden and will be purchasing an atmospheric water generator,, yep looking at one that will produce 20 liters of water per 24 hour with 30% humidity,, works sort of like an air conditioner condensing water from the air,, thats the best way to make sure its pure and kills all bacteria
great stuff guys, can’t wait for more. bout to get off the grid myself soon. me my wife and two kids. we’ve been lookin at teepees. not sure about a permanent location. what is your opinoin on choosing a location?
that is some bangin ass drum n bass trax at the end bro
excellent thanks guys
@notbored12 Funny you should mention that. We were up until 5 this morning putting up insulation in the studio.
Are you planning on insulating your buildings?
Excellent vid. We hear politicians and people in the media constantly pay lip service about alternative energy and conservation and here you show someone who is actually living it, and walking the talk. Thanks for this 5*****!!!
very kool man, very kool
I was dunb to the depth of off the grid and I love it so how can become apart?
Big O
I’m trying hard. I have a long way to go.
You’ve won me, great job.
@pvelectric
The huge variable is your individual consumption.
Everything the media tells you. Florescent (or better yet led) lighting, unplug anything with a remote. One key is to get the inverter to TURN OFF during the night cause it takes some wattage just to run itself. So if you have a wall wart plugged in for your monitor, unplug it.
And if your running pure solar, forget about toasters, heaters, electric ovens, blow dryers, anything that produces heat.
Either that or lot$ of solar panels.
US DOE: “A) Peak solar array alternating current (ac) efficiency (assumed) = 11.25% B) Surface (active) area per KW ac peak array output =96 square feet (…) Average US daily electricity consumption in 2000 in kWh =9,975,342,466 J) Total array surface area to equal daily US electricity consumption given the above assumptions = 6,429 square miles. If at least double that area is needed for spacing between rows of modules, etc., total surface area covered by a solar PV power plant would be 12,857
dude you are the best you rock keep it up
Awesome vid, you’re dogs look maybe a bit too well fed though – I’m just joshing ya, they look really healthy. Do you feed them standard pet food or fresh kill from the bush or both?
@HiPointMan Thanks bro. theres actually 4 people here (3 at the present, my girl is out east for holiday). We all do work online and run our own business. I work 7 days a week but thats by choice. Im going to kick back more this year though and go out east and be grandpa for a spell:)
nice vid and great job 2 both of ya. but you off the grid i would assume no job (sweet) so how do you pay for everything at homedepot etc. again great job guys.
It’s a youtube link and they don’t let you put whole links up. Copy and paste over the link starting at watch.
i’ve been having fun with my beard too… and my hair. Playing the part of the “mountain freak”, “letting my freak flag fly” csn
i don’t think i’m an an intorvert, but i’m definitely the reclusive type.
If you don’t do it before you “have to” then it’ll be too late. I say that because of all the surprises i’ve encountered up here. Ex gardening. It takes a couple of years before you learn enough to sustain yourself.
Also; If the outside infrastructure were not there to help ie: home depot etc, it would have been much more difficult. That it not to say it would be impossible to survive, it would just be much more unconfortable.
who are you referring to?
dude you look black =)
Yep.
And you chuckled about my beard. Looks like yer doing well out there.
