Alternative Energy – Who Needs a Wind Farm Anyway?

April 7th, 2009

Have you noticed lately there is a lot of talk about wind farms and how it will create hundreds of job. What is wind power exactly and why do they want to build these farms anyway,is there something wrong with what we are using now. This article will give a brief over view of what a wind farm is, do we need these big bladed things dotted around our hills and valleys and are they worth the time and effort.

To find out more about wind farms we have to look at the wind as a power source. For hundreds of years sailing boats used the wind to get from continent to continent. Wind turbines where used to pump water but now the wind is being used to produce electricity.

Here’s how that works:

? The wind turns the blades, which spins a horizontal shaft.

? The spinning shaft turns metal wires between magnets

? This makes electricity

? The power of a wind turbine is measured in kilowatts. One kilowatt is 1,000 watts

The energy we are using right now will not be around in 50 years time so yes that is why we have to look at alternative energy like wind farms.

It should not come as a surprise that for the wind turbines to work they need to be on hill sides to catch the wind so there is no getting around that, but there is one big bonus they will not pollute the environment like the fossil fuels we are using right now.
